Race/ethnic differences and age-variation in the effects of birth outcomes on infant mortality in the U.S

چکیده
This paper investigates effects of continuous measures of birth outcomes on U.S. infant mortality for non-Hispanic white, black, and Mexican-American females. Birth outcomes show larger effects on neonatal mortality with smaller effects later on. Unlike static effects models, age-varying effect models of early and late gestational age and small birth weight statistically adjust for the black neonatal mortality disadvantage. While Mexican American infant mortality largely mirrors that of whites throughout the first year, higher neonatal mortality among blacks reflects disadvantaged birth outcome composition. Higher postneonatal mortality among blacks remains, net of birth outcomes, and may largely reflect socio-environmental disadvantages. 1 Direct all correspondence to Daniel A. Comparison of Continuous and Intermittent Feeding Methods in Low Birth Weight Infants
Objective About 1 % of infants are of very low birth weight. However, they comprise about 50% of infant mortality. We compare the effects of continuous versus intermittent feeding on physical growth, gastrointestinal tolerance and macronutrient retention in low birth weight infants (Methods A prospective randomized trial clinical trial was performed from 2004-2005. Very low birth weight neonate...
متن کاملPossible factors illuminating increased disparities in neonatal mortality in Wisconsin from 1991-2005.
BACKGROUND Neonatal mortality has been perceived as one of the critical and sensitive measures that reflect not only the heath status of infants and their mothers, but also the general well-being of a society. However, our knowledge of racial disparities in neonatal mortality associated with low birth weight and short gestation is relatively limited. As part of continuing statewide efforts to a...

OBJECTIVE This study examines the maternal characteristics and birth outcomes of infants of U.S. resident Asian-Indian-American (AIA) mothers and compares those to infants of U.S. resident Whites and African-American (AA) mothers. METHODS Single live births to U.S. resident mothers with race/ethnicity coded on birth certificate as AIA, non-Hispanic White, or non-Hispanic AA were drawn from NC...
متن کاملP-179: The Role of Fetal Sex on Preterm Labor
Background: Preterm labor is a major problem in obstetric practice. Rates of preterm birth vary between different populations and ethnic groups. In maternal fetal medicine, gender differences in outcome are often observed. Epidemiologic studies have suggested that the incidence of preterm birth is also higher in pregnancies carrying a male fetus. The purpose of this article is to review the evi...
